VDOT has $5 million to spend on yet another study? If they had spent half as much on roads as on studies, we might have a world class transportation network here in Hampton Roads. As a region, we need to focus on building a well-planned “third crossing.” Expanding the HRBT will absolutely reduce congestion on [...]

According to a VP article today, the Virginia Department of Transportation may require Virginia Beach to use the Norfolk Southern corridor for light rail in exchange for the $20 million dollar contribution for its purchase. This should not be new. That was the stated purpose when the state approved the grant to assist in the [...]

I know I have mentioned Virginia Beach’s Strategic Growth Areas before but I wanted to touch on them again since the Virginian Pilot had an article about SGAs in Saturday’s paper. The Pilot’s Aaron Applegate reported that, in order to make up for the fact that the city has run out of large tracts of [...]

The Virginian-Pilot reported the other day that Wally Erb, the man behind the the most recent drive for a light rail referendum, was able to gather only 1,083 signatures. Unfortunately for Mr. Erb, he needed 25,000 signatures. 25,000 signatures represent less than six percent of Virginia Beach’s population. 1,083 signatures represent less than .25% of [...]

The Virginian-Pilot is reporting today that the Beach is planning on implementing form-based zoning code at the Oceanfront in an effort to make in more pedestrian friendly. While I have written on this topic before and I think that it is an excellent idea and direction for Virginia Beach, I would like to head off [...]

I recently finished reading a book by David Rusk called “Cities without Suburbs.” I highly recommend this book to everyone. The book argues in support of regional cooperation and/or consolidation of suburbs with their historically central cities. Going beyond your typical benefits of regional cooperation, this book explains, with evidence, that there are many benefits [...]

There has been much talk recently about the performance of HRT President & CEO Michael Townes. While I do think that he should share responsibility for the Tide-related cost overruns, I do not believe that he should be held responsible for not informing the board about the $80,000 allegedly stolen from the fare boxes over [...]

I didn’t actually think that I would be writing an article such as this. While I assumed that HRT was just as mismanaged as every other government-run organization in the region, state, or country, I also assumed that HRT would at least step up their game for this project. The HRT President and CEO, Michael [...]

Fairfax recently released a new 10-year plan aimed at making transit travel more attractive the vehicle travel. The plan would increase service and frequency, create new routes, and use innovative techniques such as tying traffic lights to bus schedules, so that they never wait at lights. They also plan on utilizing dedicated bus lanes and [...]

…So that they can fight for something… They know it has little chance of success. If they fight for it and they lose, its no harm to their reputation because it has been failing for 25 years. If they win, they get a new highway on their resume`. Regardless, it makes their representatives look like they work hard for transportation.
